Talent Management Strategies to Retain High Potential Employees

Talent Management Strategies to Retain High Potential EmployeesTalent Management Strategies to Retain High Potential EmployeesTalent Management Strategies to Retain High Potential Employees Recruiting Training CornerWhat constitutes a high potential employee? Depending on who you ask, its generally regarded as the top 3 to 5% of a company who demonstrate high levels of contribution. And while every organization may have its own twist on that definition, there is consensus that this group is always in hot demand. So why do many companies invest a lot of effort into recruiting behauptung employees, but then do very little by way of talent managementand talent development to retain them?At a time when this type of talent is so crucial, organizations must put employee development strategies in place to avoid the pitfall. Below are five such strategies that you should be thinking about today.Pair them with effective beraters. The Odyssey of Homer introduced us to Mentor, Odysseus trusted adv isor.Today, we commonly use that word to mean a more experienced person who can advise and teach us.Corporate environments have taken notice of this talent management concept and have started implementing more structured mentoring programs. These can be a very powerful tool in acclimating employees to the corporate cultureand values.Mentoringcan also be enormously valuable for those high potential employees who thrive on interaction with influential colleagues. The difficulty lies in finding that perfect match between a seasoned employee with the willingness and openness to mentor someone, and a high potential employee who respects that mentor and is eager to incorporate the knowledge. But when that is achieved, it can be a great employee retention approach.Give them high visibility assignments.Giving high potential employees high visibility and meaningful assignments is key to keeping them engaged. This can take on many different forms.Think about handing over stretch assignments tha t are pivotal to the organizations success. While this may frighten some managers, it is important that these employees be given challenging opportunities that are outside their comfort zones. They may make mistakes along the way, but thats a necessary part of their employee development.Other things you may want to explore include rotation to a supplier or partner, swapping positions, coaching/mentoring, or other creative talent development solutions that expand a high potential employees visibility and depth of experience.Openly communicate with them. This may seem like stating the obvious, but if a high potential employee has a concern, or an idea, it is in the organizations best interest to listen.Give them the one-on-one attention they deserve with all levels of management and foster their creativity. You may also want to consider communicating that you believe they are high potential, and as such, enormously valuable to the organization. Some managers may worry that this will caus e the employee to develop a sense of entitlement, but the more likely scenario is that it will boost their desire to work toward fully realizing their potential.Invest in their learning and development Think about other types of learning and employee development opportunities that you could offer, beyond certifications or employee training programs. This group yearns for dynamic and ever-changing tasks. Is there an opportunity for an employee to be sent overseas for an extended period of time? Is your organization large enough that it can implement special tracks for high potential employees? Many organizations are coming up with talent management structures that allow one employee to touch many facets of the organization, from sales, to marketing, to customer service. For those employees who thrive on constantly learning, what better opportunity than to have assignments in all of these different roles?Remember that if you implement something like this, the employee must be empowered t o actively participate in the planning of his or her career development.Measure progress quarterly.Given that companies measure themselves on a quarterly basis, wouldnt it make sense to take your high potential employees and measure them the same way?If youre not thinking that way today, you should start.By exposing this group to mentors, new and high visibility projects, position swapping, etc, you are putting them in unfamiliar territory.Instead of waiting until the end of the year for the performance review, implement a proactive quarterly review that provides them with more immediate feedback. In turn, this feedback can be used to improve the employees performance in the short-term, thus improving overall performance and communication at all levels.Regardless of where your organization stands at the moment, it is imperative that deliberate talent management strategies be put into place in order to grow and retain your high potential employees. You simply need to understand the sta te of your particular corporate environment, and then implement those ideas that fit your corporate culture and resources.

Change is not difficult. We make it difficult

Change is not difficult. We make it difficultChange is not difficult. We make it difficultWe are mora afraid of change than we shouldbe.Resisting change wont make it disappear It will make things worse. What we resist, persists.Resistance is a signal, not a natural behavior. We must listen to what its trying to tell us, instead of turning it into a paralyzing sign.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreLao Tzu summed that up perfectly,Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Dont resist them that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way theylike. As a society, we screwed up ur relationship with change. Im not saying its easy. But treating it as the enemy, rather than ur ally, doesnt help. Change is ur natural state of being. By focusing on what we can control, it will feel less stressful and more comfortable to achieve.Ch ange has a badrapWe fear what change can do to us, instead of thinking about what we can do because of it.Experts love making us feel we are facing a crisis The acceleration of change creates anxiety and stress. The Chinese word for crisis is danger at the point of juncture Consultants present change as a life-or-death situation. While this approach might benefit their business organizations get scared and hire them to help its intimidating people.Change is a continuum, an evolution. So, why do we love to portray it as something threatening thats coming to get us?Inthis well-researched essay, alexanderplatz Murrellmakes a strong case the pace of change is not accelerating, as everyone claims. As the author explains, The feeling that we are being carried along by an uncontrollable current of change is not unique to modern times. Experts said that change was accelerating in 1900. They also said it in 1920. In 1940, in 1960, in 1980 and 2000.The article explains how the belief that we liv e in an era of mind-boggling economic upheaval and change is unfounded Research by various economists shows a decades-long slowdown in alfruchtwein every indicator of business dynamism.Change orDieThinking in binary terms doesnt help.Weve turned change into a dangerous species It feels like an enemy thats ready to hunt us down. Rather than an ally that can help us grow, we are afraid it will wipe us off the face of the earth. We need to get past the life-or-death perspective. Moving beyond our comfort zone shouldnt be stressful or dangerous its usually safer than we think.Thats the mistake many people make theres an intermediate space between the comfort zone and the dangerous zone, asI wrote here. Personal growth happens in this temporary space called theLearning Zone. Only by crossing the line between certainty and familiarity, you can grow.Leaving our comfort zone is not a radical decision though. You can always take baby steps and explore. We abandon the comfort zone temporarily, not forever. The secret lies infinding the balancebetween new and familiar things.Change doesnt need to cause harm. You can stretch beyond your comfort zone without putting your life at risk.We are more adaptive than wethinkur brain is like a muscle the more you exercise it, the fitter it becomes. When talking about resistance to change, most people refer to our reptilian brain. The fight-or-flight response is a physiological reaction that occurs in the presence of something terrifying. The release of hormones prepares your body to either stay and deal with a threat or to run away. But thats just one side of the story.Neurons that fire together wire together. DonaldHebbWhen brain cells communicate frequently, the connection between them strengthens. Messages that travel the same pathway in the brain over and over begin to transmit faster and faster. Training and practice can encourage our neurons to fire together.Playing tennis for the first time can be intimidating. But, the more yo u practice hitting the ball, the more natural it becomes.Change makes us feel off-center our initial response is to return to the way things were. But, we are much more adaptive and resilient than we think. As Confucius said, Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.A groundbreaking studyon resilience busted the myth that a troubled childhood leaves you emotionally crippled forever.Psychologist Emmy Werner spent 40 years studying kids from impoverished, unstable families. In spite of the adverse environment, 30% of the children grew up to become successful students and adults many of them surpassed peers from more privileged backgrounds. We also have a natural tendency to return to a stable level.TheHedonic Treadmilltheorydescribes how, after either negative or positive events, we usually get back to a relatively stable level of happiness. External events can boost or harm our emotional state. But, after some time, we get used to that new level and then return to ournormallevel of happiness.Change, regardless if its positive or negative, doesnt kill you.Resistance is asignalResearchby Rosabeth Moss Kanter identified ten key reasons why people resist change. Not surprisingly, most of them are emotional. But theres an underlying theme our need to be in control. Most of the times, we see change as something that happens to us, rather than us being part of it.Change makes us feel off-center our first response is usually to do whatever we can to return the way the world was before. We feel a loss of control, so we do whatever is possible to regain mastery over our lives. The paradox is that we want to be in control of something that we cant fully control. Most of the things in life are out of our control. But, we can manage our decisions and emotional reaction resistance is not a natural behavior then, but a choice. Our ability to adapt is more natural We must learn tocontrol less and trust more.Fear to change is a signal that a windo w of opportunity has opened in front of you Inaction can be more damaging. As Seth Godin wrote, By the time the fear subsides, it will be too late. Someone else will have already done it, it will already be said or it will be irrelevant. The reason youre afraid is that theres leverage here, something that might happen. Which is exactly the signal youre looking for.Resistance is also signal that our identity might be at risk.Research showsthat loss of identity is a key barrier to collaboration among groups People dont want to lose the sense of who they are by opening up their work rituals. We believe that, by changing our behaviors, we change who we are. Or, even worse, we think we cannot adopt new habits because thats not who I am.If you want to improve your fitness, labeling yourself as Im in bad shape wont help you start exercising. You must separate your identity from your behavior. That you like sleeping until late doesnt make you a lazy person either that shouldnt hold you from changing your habits.Labels are deceiving they oversimplify who we are. They get us stuck in our present reality instead of liberating all our possibilities. You are not fixed, but fluid. The brain can be trained to create new neural connections and turn what initially seemed daunting into something familiar. The mind can also be trained to accept, understand, andmanage our emotions and thoughts(without suppressing them or letting our feelings take over). As a change instigator, Ive seen teams dramatically transform their relationship with change in just a couple of hours when you help them understand their emotions, and providea safe space and toolsto address those.Part of our confusion about change has to do with low self-awareness we are detached from the natural rhythms of life. We are so obsessed with science, stats, and measuring everything that we lost connection with our common sense. We are continually becomingChange is a sign that we are alive. The world is dynamic, not static . Fighting impermanence or change is going against the basic rules of nature.Refusing to grow up may be a form of rebellion. But really growing up could be a revolution.- SusanNeimanBeing and becoming are united they define the path of life. Being represents our relationship with the now becoming, our relationship with our future. The future will happen to us regardless. External events will affect our perceived stability People are not under your control. Their decisions will have positive or negative consequences in your life. You cant alter that. But, you can change how you react to it.Instead of trying to control change we need to allow it to become.Everything that happens to us shapes our lives. And then, we return to a new normal. The less we resist that transition, the better well be.As Mankutimma said, Even if the floods cause the seas to unite drowning the land in between. Even if the forest is covered in fog. Do not let go of your inner tranquility. Do not feel anxious. Th e seas will recede. The fog will clear up. There is an end to everything good or bad.We must have an open relationship with the future. Resisting change doesnt allow us to benefit from all the possibilities that the future can bring. Personal growth is about becoming to continually be learning, growing, evolving, and transforming.Make space for things to happen. When we resist, we block our future. When we adapt, we keep the door open to new experiences. We cant change reality, but we can change our attitude.Take water for example the most changing element in nature. Rain for a farmer is a blessing, but a disturbance for tourists visiting a new city. The roar of big waves can be exciting for a surfer, but a worry for a man with little kids.Embracing change is about becoming like water we cannot control the environment, but we can choose how we adapt to it.Bruce Lee said it best,Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it.Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash.Be water, my friend. This article originally appeared on Medium. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

What happens when the sun sets on you

What happens when the sun sets on you What happens when the sun sets on you Newsweek, The Boston Globe and The Washington Post were sold for about 5% of what they were worth a decade ago.Old fame fades. Old treasures dull. Old values disappear. What happens when the sun sets on you, dear Reader? When the clever things you did in your twenties, and the book learning you picked up in school, and even the scars on your back from your thirties, lose their relevance to the modern corporation? What will you do then?Because I can tell you, you’re not going to want to take a 95% haircut the way Newsweek and the newspapers did.All skills become commoditized over time. That means what was hard to do yesterday, becomes easy today, and worthless tomorrow.J.P. Morgan - the man, not the bank - became America’s most prominent financier by doing what we would today call asset-backed lending. If you’d told him that some day tens of thousands of kids right out of school would be doing the type of lending he did, he would’ve scoffed at you. Would’ve told you about the difficulty of assessing a company and its prospects, the importance of knowing the ins and outs of the resale market, the sharp eye and decisive gut needed to measure a man’s creditworthiness over a handshake. He felt this skill was specialized and immortal. But it wasn’t true. Skills pass from the brains of geniuses, to the efficiency of systems, to the dull routine of forms and process. The entire prospect of the modern business is to create systems to replace this special “in the head” judgment with impersonal routine. It is much safer for companies to rely on a documentable system than the risky circumstance of specialized knowledge walking in and out the front door. All skills become commoditized, and all businesses pass from glory to gory:Retailing, once a glamorous industry populated by the Saks’ and Bloomingdale’s and Marshall Fields’ of the world, has become a grind to eke out even a few points of profit in today’s Internet-saturated landscape.Automobiles, whic h powered the US and Detroit to global manufacturing supremacy, now mostly make money for companies other than the manufacturers.Stereos, TVs and other consumer electronics now decline in price by a percent per week! And the list could go on for miles. The only way for companies to keep up on the treadmill is to run faster. And faster. And faster. All skills become commoditized, all positions of influence and domination decrease over time, all that profits fades away. All, said the Preacher, is vanity. So your plan must be that you will never let the sun set on your skills, never let your position of value - to your employer, to the market, to the customer - fade away.So how are you going to confront the almost certain fact that the “you” of the present - your skills, knowledge, insights and experience - will fade in value, and for you to keep up with the world, you must ensure that the you of 2015, of 2016, of 2026, is always becoming a newer, more talented, professional?I’ll be back next week with the steps you can take to keep ahead of the sun.In the meantime…I’m rooting for you.

How to Approach a Competitor About a Job

How to Approach a Competitor About a Job How to Approach a Competitor About a Job The bottom-line on non-competes and the ethics of employers who want your insider knowledge.Imagine you’re an account executive working an important trade show. A top competitor approaches you about a job opportunity and the next morning, over breakfast, you’re offered a chance to double your money and earn a fast-track promotion to the executive ranks. Next step, “Just send us your resume.”Can you legally and ethically jump to the other side? What should you - and shouldn’t you - put on your resume and cover letter? How do you make this type of move without burning bridges?Your No. 1 issue is “CNC”If you’re thinking about changing sides, your No. 1 issue is a non-compete clause or covenant-not-to-compete (CNC).If you have not signed a CNC, then you’re probably free and clear.Otherwise, to avoid a potential lawsuit against you and your new employer, you must get advice from a lawyer who specializes in employment law. Companies can and do enforce these agreements ( except in California, where they’re generally illegal).Sometimes the CNC or non-compete clause is a separate document, and sometimes it’s buried in a job application. You might have signed one and forgotten all about it! (Important point: These agreements usually apply to your company’s clients as well as its competitors.)Non-compete agreements are especially common with technology jobs because competition among companies is fierce and potential employees are usually willing to sign anything in a weak job market. So before a competitor considers hiring you, they’ll demand your full disclosure. What to put - and leave off - of your resume and cover letterBe very discreet. Show utmost respect for your current (or former) employer in the resume and during the interview. Never disclose any insider tidbits because any negative information reflects badly on your own character and loyalty. Rehearse your story in great detail, and don’t let the interviewer lure you into this trap . Tweaking your resume for a competitor is easy. Just remove any items - direct or indirect - that might involve the competitor. If you’re in sales, for example, don’t highlight any competitive wins you’ve made against this particular employer. Never use personal pronouns (“we, our, or their,” for example). This rule applies to all resume writing, and it’s especially important when you’re sending it to a competitor. If you are making the first move, use the cover letter to reveal that you are (or were) working for a direct competitor. Option: Replace your company’s actual name with “COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL” and just note it’s in the same marketplace. If you’re sure that you have not signed a non-compete agreement with your current employer, definitely mention that in a postscript (P.S.) at the end of your e-mail or cover letter. Absolutely mention a mutual, trusted referral in the first line of your e-mail or cover letter, for example: “Our mutual colleague, Mary Smith, suggested that I contact you regarding the ABC position at Company XYZ.” The ” cheating-spouse” syndromeWorking for a competitor can catapult your career to the next level because outsiders value you more highly (especially if the management of your own company has come to take you for granted). And the competitor that hires you benefits because you’re ready to hit the ground running and start producing. But be sensitive to the emotions a move may provoke in the company you left behind. As you make your move, be prepared for some angry emotions and accusations of betrayal from former colleagues. Remember, they’re still with the company, and you’ve suddenly redefined yourself as a competitor.Be respectful of their feelings, and brace yourself for some blowback as you advance confidently towards your career goals.

5 ways your job can actually make you happier

5 ways your job can actually make you happier 5 ways your job can actually make you happier When you report to your doctor (or your partner) that you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed or anxious, one of the first places to source your angst is your job. Since the average person will spend a whopping 90,000 hours at the office, if this area of your life is pressure-filled or toxic, it can wreak havoc on every aspect of our lifestyle. On the flip side, for those who feel inspired and fulfilled by their profession, a career can actually make your day-to-day happier. This usually happens when your personal values match the type of output you’re producing, or when the structure of your routine matches with your productivity levels. In other words: creating the ideal harmony will not only result in good vibes but easier upward mobility and track toward the kind of success you’ve only dreamt of. Here, some super-cool ways your gig can make you a better person - and why you should start looking for the right job ASAP.You have the structure you needSure, the concept of ‘funem ployment’ seems appealing for a week or so, but if you actually enjoy your day-in and day-out, after a while, you will feel listless. After all, according to career expert for TopResume Amanda Augustine, many people thrive on having a regular routine. When you’re in a job you like, most of the time, you will look forward to getting back to the office, filing away deadlines and firing emails.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!“Even if you’re someone who enjoys a bit of chaos, experts agree that there are many health benefits to following a daily routine, such as reduced stress levels and an increased sense of security,” she continues. “Not only can your work schedule help structure your days, but its routine makes it easier for you to incorporate other healthy habits into your day, such as exercise, meditation, and a regular bedtime - all of which add up to a happ ier, healthier you.”You feel appreciated and rewardedWhen your gig is part of your long list of reasons you’re thankful for your life, it’s probably because you feel cherished by those around you. No matter if it’s a high-five when you land a great client, or consistent, positive feedback from your manager, these pats on the back - literally or figuratively - do wonders for your self-esteem. As career branding expert Wendi Weiner shares, those who feel valued at work will actually go above and beyond in terms of performance.“In a work environment where you are consistently shown appreciation, you will also feel happier at work,” she continues. “Rewards can come in various forms: pay increase, merit bonus, a day off, or even positive affirmations. These types of things can help boost employee engagement and employee retention. When employees are rewarded in these ways, they will be encouraged to stay with the company longer, and will give more into the work they do.†Your job gives you room to growOne of the biggest sources of fatigue within the professional setting is not having a purpose. Or, being stuck in one role when you know you’re worthy - and deserving - of an increase in salary, title or responsibilities. However, Augustine says when you have a good job with the right boss, you’ll feel challenged (and excited!) to step outside of your comfort zone, try new things and learn new skills.“You’ll feel happier when you’re encouraged to take risks and given an opportunity to learn more about your interests, passions, talents, and weaknesses,” she shares. “With every achievement make, you become more confident, knowledgeable, and skilled.”You connect with the cultureThough not everyone needs validation, friendship or support from office culture, many people rate camaraderie fairly high on their list of ‘must-haves.’ If you happen to be this type of social team player, finding the right match in values and habits amongst your colleagues and c-level staff will make a difference in how happy you are. As Weiner explains, some companies will put an emphasis on this part of the business, hosting internal events, retreats, and functions that boost morale.“This, in turn, creates a bonding environment for the employees to learn more about one another and engage with each other on a more personal level. The ability to feel like a family in the work environment can also increase personal fulfillment as you spend a large amount of time in the office and can truly create a stronger, more cohesive atmosphere,” she notes. You could meet the love of your lifeSure, you probably shouldn’t accept a job offer because there are a plethora of single people on staff - but it could be the cherry on top. Augustine points to research that found 36 percent of professionals have dated a co-work, and 31 percent of those ended up marrying their date. It makes sense: you have shared interests, you spend tons of time togeth er and well, you probably desire the same future.Beyond a potential romance, it’s also likely you will develop lifelong friendships when you are at a job you love. Working alongside other professionals as you deal with clients, deadlines, manager and everything in between brings you closer, and can extend beyond the life of the job or office walls. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Good and Bad Deals in the Music Industry

Good and Bad Deals in the Music Industry Good and Bad Deals in the Music Industry Is that music deal on the table a good one or should you run the other way? Sometimes it can be hard to tell. Check out these common music industry scenarios and see if you can spot the good music deals from the unfair music deals. Scenario One Youre trying to land your first gig, and the booking agent at your chosen venue says that theyre willing to give you a shot. Theres no money in it, but youll be playing on a pretty busy night at the club and you can sell some CDs. Good deal or bad deal? Good Deal. You may feel like youre getting hustled if you get asked to play a show for free (or next to free), but try looking at it from the venues perspective. You havent built up a following yet. Youre not going to be bringing many people into the venue. If venues paid every up and coming musician over the odds for a show, there would be no more venues. What you really have here is a great opportunity. Granted, its not a financial opportunity, but what you are being handed is the chance to earn some fans and build up that following that will eventually allow you to demand some good money for your shows. Impress the venue, and theyll want to have you back. Start pulling a crowd, and theyll want to pay you - its not in a venues interest to refuse to play musicians who draw a crowd, and accepting the low paying/no paying shows as you start out lets them know youre willing to do the work required to be successful. It doesnt set you up for being the sap that always plays free shows. Lots of musicians price themselves right out of the market in which they belong, and thats cutting off your nose to spite your face. Pavement once sang, youve got to pay your dues before you pay the rent and that REALLY holds true when it comes to playing shows. Scenario Two Tambourine player wanted! Must have rehearsal space, guitar, bass, drum kit, mics, amps, a refrigerator keg and the ability to make a mean fried chicken. *SERIOUS MUSICIANS ONLY.* Good Deal or Bad Deal? Bad Deal - I almost feel embarrassed for asking this one. You may want to play music, but that doesnt mean you want to play with just anyone. These musicians need  you to deliver the goods to allow them to play - theyre not looking for your collaboration. Read between the lines when youre reading ads for musicians to make sure your music skills are really what theyre interested in. Scenario Three Youve found a physical distribution deal with a company that says they can get your CDs into a certain chain store. There is a pretty large upfront fee, and the fees are graduated - the more you pay, the more copies you can get into the stores, and the more store locations your CDs will be stocked in. You get to pick which stores your CDs go into. Good deal or bad deal? Bad Deal - Now, its true that some people dont have a problem with this kind of deal, and they do happen. Im not a fan for a few reasons. First of all, theres already a fee structure built into distribution. Distributors get a cut when your music is sold. An upfront fee is double dipping. Plus, getting your CDs into the store is only a tiny part of the battle. Putting some CDs on a shelf with thousands of other CDs doesnt really do much to increase the chance of selling some music unless there is some good promotion behind it all. Although some distributors work with any label that comes along, a lot of physical distributors are selective. That means that they will be actively involved in marketing your music (after all, thats how they make their money). When you pay for distribution up front, where is the motivation to sell your music? There are plenty of free distribution options out there that dont get involved in promoting your music but that at least dont ask for cash upfront. Theyre a better choice. Scenario Four An indie label is interested in putting out your album. They cant afford to pay you a large advance because their budget is tight and they need the money for pressing and promotion. Youve already paid for recording. Good deal or bad deal? Good Deal - The idea of a big advance might be appealing, but in the long run, its not as valuable as someone spending time and money working hard to promote your music. Recouping your recording cost would be great, but the cold, hard fact of the matter is that you may not do that right out of the gate. An indie label that really believes in your music and is willing to work hard for you can do a lot to take your career to the next level, even if they cant put much cash on the table up front. Of course, in exchange for your flexibility on the advance thing, the deal you sign with the label should be nice and easy, too. Theres no need to sign a five album deal with a small label. The future is too uncertain for all parties involved, so take it one thing at a time. Scenario Five Youve stumbled across a company online that claims they can make you a music biz star in seven days. All you have to do is pay $500, and youll get personalized information and a special phone session with a music industry expert who knows all the tricks for overnight success. You know that theyre at the top of their game - after all, a great deal of the space on their website is devoted to testimonials from musicians just like you who took the course. It seems like a small price to pay to finally make your music dreams come true. Besides, youll be a star in a week - youll make that $500 back in an hour! Good Deal or Bad Deal? Bad Deal: - This bears repeating - BAD DEAL. Making it in the music industry is hard, hard work. It takes dedication, patience, perseverance, humility and not a little bit of luck. Anyone who tells you anything different either doesnt know what theyre talking about or is lying to you. Anyone who wants to charge you money for a cheerleading session and some meaningless and/or bad advice is taking advantage of you. Oh, theyll yell loudly, stomp their feet, be over-opinionated, and tell you that anyone who doesnt use their service or see things their way lacks vision/doesnt know what theyre talking about/doesnt really want to make in the music industry. Kind of trying to sell you a timeshare. The bottom line is that it is oh-so-easy to prey on peoples dreams, like becoming a successful musician, and a lot of people are willing to exploit that to make a quick buck. Be careful out there. These five scenarios are just a few examples of some common deals you might encounter, but you have probably detected a theme that will help you judge other deals that come your way. Deals that arent necessarily financially rewarding may have other benefits that can be very helpful when youre trying to build your music career. On the flipside, paying for something that is usually offered for free or under a different fee structure is a red flag. In other words - common sense. Your best tool in making real progress in your music career is judging your opportunities with a clear, realistic head and making good decisions.

Gross Revenue Description and Key Issues

Gross Revenue Description and Key Issues Gross Revenue Description and Key Issues A businesss gross revenue is the money generated by all its  operations before deductions are taken for expenses. Revenue can come from the sale of the companys products or services, from the sale of surplus equipment or property, or from the sale of shares of stock in the company. It can come from a variety of other sources (both large and small) including such things as  interest, royalties, and fees. In its simplest term, all the revenue of a business from all of its sources is added together to compute gross revenue. Gross revenue is generally referred to for a specific period of time, such as the gross revenue for the quarter or the gross revenue for the year.   The Distinction Between Sales and Gross Revenue Its  important to distinguish between gross revenue and the actual sales number in  organizations- especially when there are multiple sources of revenue such as sales, interest, and other proceeds. The sales number is  all proceeds from customers for the provision of goods and services, less any sales-related expenses. This is  often referred to as  net revenue or operating revenue.  Gross revenue references the total amount of the sales contract, while net revenue reflects the amount billed to the customer at that point in time.   Analysis of Sales Numbers Its  important to identify the number that reflects the actual sales generated through the provision of goods and services for all comparison periods when you are evaluating company performance and comparing it to prior periods. Net revenue or operating revenue is useful for assessing trends and various measures and ratios  of the efficiency of the companys sales and marketing efforts. Some ratios incorporate gross revenues as well. A number of  frequently referenced financial metrics that incorporate revenue totals include: Sales growthThe compound annual growth rate in sales (CAGR)Gross and net profit marginsSelling, general and administrative (SGA) expenses to salesOperating expense ratiosAccounts receivable turnoverTotal asset turnoverFixed asset turnover These and other ratios that incorporate revenue numbers are carefully scrutinized by a firms management, as well as by external analysts, in order to gauge the overall health of a firms revenue generation activities.   Pay Attention to Revenue Recognition Rules Recognized revenue is the amount of revenue thats allowed to be recognized in the current period as governed by generally accepted accounting principles. For businesses that rely on long-term contracts (or in software subscription or software license maintenance models), the true picture of health is the amount of revenue that is able to be recognized in that period. For example, an organization may contract for a sale with a value of $3 million over three years, but  it is only allowed to recognize that revenue in one-year chunks of $1 million.  A software license might call for a maintenance fee of $30,000 over three years, but  the firm can only recognize the revenue in one-year chunks, one month at a time. If  the maintenance agreement is established at the six-month mark in year number one, the firm can only recognize half of the annual amount or 6/12 of the one-year fee of $10,000, or $5,000 for that particular year. If you have any questions whatsoever about these key issues, you should always consult a qualified accountant (preferably one familiar with your business) to determine the proper revenue recognition rules for your business.

Free Medical Receptionist Entry Level Resume Template

Free Medical Receptionist Entry Level Resume Template Free Medical Receptionist Entry Level Resume Template The resume is what earns you a job interview, and it is the first aspect of your job application process to catch the attention of employers. When you are looking for work, prioritizing your resume is the best strategy to maximize your chances of being hired. Having less experience can make creating a strong resume difficult, but entry level resumes are not actually too difficult to write. Ultimately, the medical receptionist position is typically an entry level job, so hiring managers are already expecting a resume with slightly less experience, meaning you do not have anything to worry about, but keep in mind that you also have an opportunity to really blow employers away.Create ResumeCustomize ResumeWhat to Include in a Medical Receptionist Entry Level ResumeEntry level resumes should usually include all the standard sections and not vary too much from the format. It is always important to judge the position opening and company yourself and decide the best approach to applying. Th is means it may be appropriate and effective to find a unique approach, but always at least include a summary, skill section, experience information, and education section. Your minimal experience may make filling some of these sections out tricky, so you should find a professional approach that works for your resume. In the end, you should not worry too much, as employers know what level of experience to expect with entry level resumes.Common Resume Fails: Mistakes to AvoidPutting career objectives in the summary section: Do not describe what you hope to attain in your resume. It is common to include this information in the summary, as it used to be typical to do so, but this is considered incorrect now. Instead, describe your unique character traits and any relevant work history you have.Neglecting your experience section: You may have little or possibly even no work history, but not having this section will instantly make readers consider you a much less viable option. Include vo lunteer work, unrelated jobs or school responsibilities that you can apply to the medical receptionist position.Writing too little: It can be difficult to include enough to fill your resume entirely, but it is important to do so. Your goal is one full page. It can also be just as bad if your resume uses two pages due to wordiness or poor formatting. Be sure to shoot for just one page and manage your content accordingly. Not considering what the appearance says about you: You should look at your resume and think about what readers will think at a glance. If there are many large blocks of text, it will be hard to read. If there are gaps and big empty spaces, it will look sparse and unqualified.
